Foundational SEO still applies
Google points site owners to ordinary technical requirements, spam policies, and helpful people-first content for both AI Overviews and AI Mode.
Official guidance reviewed July 17, 2026
Google says AI Overviews and AI Mode use the same foundational SEO requirements as Search and do not require special AI-only optimization. A page must be indexed and eligible to appear with a snippet, while helpful people-first content and normal technical SEO remain relevant. Eligibility does not guarantee that Google will crawl, index, show, cite, or recommend the page.

Google points site owners to ordinary technical requirements, spam policies, and helpful people-first content for both AI Overviews and AI Mode.
A supporting page must be indexed and eligible to show in Search with a snippet. Google documents no additional technical requirement for these AI features.
Google says AI Overviews and AI Mode may use different models and techniques, so their responses and supporting links should not be treated as one cohort.
Even a compliant and useful page is not guaranteed to be crawled, indexed, served, linked, cited, or recommended.
| Layer | What it can establish | What it cannot establish alone |
|---|---|---|
| Implementation | Crawl and index controls, visible content, canonical, snippet eligibility, and matching structured data | That Google crawled, indexed, served, linked, cited, or recommended the page |
| Search Console Generative AI report | Impressions for property links in supported generative AI Search features plus page, country, device, and date dimensions | Literal brand mention, claim citation, factual support, recommendation, click, or conversion |
| GeoCheckTool repeated observation | Answer text, citations, mention and factual-support distributions, failures, coverage, route, and sampling lineage | Every consumer interface, a stable rank, causal uplift, or future result |
| Business funnel | Observed clicks, Quick starts, confirmed questions, completed diagnoses, purchases, or subscription states when separately instrumented | That one SEO change caused a later external or commercial outcome |
Google's Generative AI performance reports are rolling out to a subset of Search Console properties. Not seeing the report can reflect rollout eligibility or insufficient supported-feature impressions; it is not automatically proof of zero AI visibility.
Confirm that the page can be crawled and indexed under the normal Search technical requirements and is eligible to display a snippet. This is an implementation state, not an AI-feature promise.
Lead with a concise answer and support it with useful detail, confirmed facts, visible evidence, clear ownership, and primary sources for time-sensitive claims.
Use structured data only when it describes visible page content. Google does not document a special schema shortcut for AI Overviews or AI Mode.
Keep Search Console generative-AI impressions separate from repeated GeoCheckTool answer observations, literal mentions, citations, factual support, clicks, Quick starts, diagnoses, and conversion.
Record the source revision, deployment, crawl, indexation, Search Console impressions, answer observations, and user actions as separate events.
When an answer retest is eligible, reuse the same confirmed question, named surface, route, sample method, locale, and comparison boundary. Retain no change and non-comparable results.
Quick selects up to 4 confirmed intent-stratified buyer questions and uses n=3 repeated samples per selected question and available surface. Its required routes are Perplexity Sonar through OpenRouter as a RAG/API observation with citations and Google AI Overview observed through SerpApi as a search-result surface. The latter is not a Google API or a reproduction of signed-in Google AI Mode.
Eligibility, ordinary SEO requirements, controls, measurement guidance, and non-guarantee boundaries.

No. Google says the same foundational SEO practices remain relevant for AI Overviews and AI Mode and that there are no additional technical requirements. A supporting page must be indexed and eligible to appear in Search with a snippet.
Google documents impressions for links to the property shown in supported generative AI features plus page, country, device, and date dimensions. The report is rolling out to a subset of properties and does not turn an impression into proof of a brand mention, citation, or recommendation.
No. Google controls crawl, indexation, serving, and links. Meeting requirements and following best practices does not guarantee that Google will crawl, index, show, cite, or recommend a page.
No. The current Quick route observes the Google AI Overview search-result surface through SerpApi. It is not a Google API and is not presented as the signed-in Google AI Mode consumer experience.
